Project

Objective

To improve national biodiversity financing through the design, implementation, and optimization of economic instruments that strengthen public finances and facilitate the private sector's economic contribution to maintaining the country's natural capital.

These instruments seek to encourage more conscious and sustainable behaviors to achieve comprehensive biodiversity conservation goals while promoting the well-being of local communities throughout the country.

Lines of Action

The "Economic Instruments for Biodiversity Conservation" Project, known as the EIBC Project, is an initiative led by the Ministry of the Environment (ME), financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Chile.

Areas of Action

The EIBC Project seeks to contribute to biodiversity conservation in Chile by implementing and strengthening regulatory and market-based instruments, adapted to local contexts and designed to generate incentives that promote the provision of ecosystem services in the country.

  • Strengthen the institutional, governance, and tool framework for the application of economic instruments for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and its ecosystem services (EIBC) in terrestrial, freshwater, marine, and coastal ecosystems.
  • Implement EIBC mechanisms, including biodiversity and ecosystem services certifications, offsets for residual impacts on biodiversity, and retribution for ecosystem services in demonstration projects.
  • Manage knowledge, learning, monitoring, and evaluation for the effective implementation of EIBC, ensuring cultural relevance and mainstreaming gender perspective.
